WHAT WE'RE GROWING
Hostas
Did you know that Hostas are the most popular perennial plant, often called the queen of the shade garden? There are thousands of varieties. Hostas are well known for providing structure, color and beauty under trees and in dark spots in yards and around buildings. Several even perform well with a fair amount of sun.
We love hostas and are growing almost 300 varieties and hunger for more! We grow them on our family farm on Whidbey Island where we have 10 hoop houses full. We buy tiny plugs from wholesale growers or more uncommon, harder to find varieties from speciality growers. We then grow them until they are large enough to go to their permanent homes. People frequently ask which is my favorite and I always say, "Whichever one I'm looking at." They are many ways to display them - in pots, under trees, lining walkways, tucked in small areas or sweeping displays.
Lilies
We grow beautiful Oriental Lilies - many of the traditional beauties and a number of the newer varities of Roselilies - often called "doubles" - although there are many more tiers to them. Because they don't have pollen, the Roselilies are very popular. In addition to being beautiful in the garden, containers and vases, oriental lilies are fragrant and long lasting cut flowers.
We buy the largest bulbs available (mostly directly from the Netherlands) and pot them up in 1 gallon pots in late winter/very early spring. We water, weed and love them until the buds begin to form. While we are primarily wholesale growers selling to regional nurseries and garden centers, we do occasionally participate as a vendor at regional garden shows. We also have a few dates open to the retail public each summer.
We are gardeners, not photographers, but knew that it would be helpful to have a website so you could look at what we're growing. Know that none of these pictures do our plants justice! We're going to work on providing more and better pictures next year. In the meantime, these will give you an idea of what we grow!
